The mission of Mountain Justice Blacksburg (MJ) is to educate ourselves and our community on the effect the coal industry has on Appalachia and the world, particularly with regards to Mountain Top Removal; to spread awareness of and promote sustainable sources of energy and income for our region; to network with other organizations working towards these ends; and to stand in solidarity with those most directly affected by the coal industry.

Mountain Justice Blacksburg is a non-hierarchical organization composed of students and members of the global community.

Mountain Justice Blacksburg is a registered Virginia Tech student organization.

Membership and involvement in Mountain Justice Blacksburg are unofficial and open to all.

As a non-heirarchical organization, all signatories and officers have signed on as such simply to assure our existence as a Virginia Tech student organization. All decision are made by consensus of those attending meetings. No one signed on as a signatory, officer, or even the faculty advisor have any more rights within the group than anyone else. These people’s only extra responsibilities are those required by Events Planning, Student Services, and other Virginia Tech bureaucracies.

As a non-heirarchical and diverse body, the actions statements, and beliefs of anyone identifying as a member of Mountain Justice Blacksburg should be understood as actions, statements, and beliefs of an individual and not of Mountain Justice Blacksburg itself.
